The Benefits of Wool

100% natural, renewable and biodegradable, wool is famous for its many unique properties that include softness, strength, versatility and technical benefits. The versatility of wool extends from wearable goods, including luxury fashion to high-performance activewear, to homewares and creative textiles.

Environmentally Friendly

When a wool fibre is disposed of, it will naturally decompose in the soil, slowly releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth making it an eco-friendly choice.

100% Renewable

Every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a completely renewable resource.

Anti-Wrinkle Properties and Durability

At a microscopic level wool fibres look much like a coiled spring that returns to shape after being bent, giving it a natural anti-wrinkle resistance as a textile. Wool’s natural elasticity means that wool is able to “spring” back into shape. This means that woolen garments tend to retain their shape better than any other natural or man-made fibre.

Naturally Breathable

Wool is breathable and regulates your temperature and moisture very effectively. The coil-like shape of wool fibres mean that it has the ability to absorb moisture vapour and then move it away to evaporate into the air, making you cool in summer.

A Good Insulator

On the flip side, wool’s insulating properties are able to trap dry air and warmth near the skin to keep you warm. Since it retains 80% of its insulating value even when saturated, wool will keep you warm even when wet.

Fire Resistance

Wool naturally extinguishes itself and does not melt, unlike synthetic fibres.

The Campaign For Wool

The Campaign for Wool was launched in Canada in 2014 by TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall as a platform for engagement and education. The Campaign stemmed from the need to raise awareness of the unique, natural and sustainable benefits of wool and is currently active across the world in 13 different countries. The Campaign for Wool not only highlights wool as a fibre, but also showcases our wool industry here in Canada.
